There are many residences spread across Kingston that are over 100 year old, and it’s their antique look that contributes to the historical characteristic of the city. However, walking down Centre Street, you will see one house that sticks out from all the others. Behind a green fence and surrounded by a wall of trees, is where Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald and his family lived from 1848 until 1849.
Bellevue House was built around 1840 by a wealthy merchant in an early suburb of Kingston. The architectural style was considered to be very different at that time. With a non-symmetrical Italianate Villa design, and the picturesque qualities is what makes Bellevue House an outstanding and memorable both in the 19th century and until this day.
Because of the uniqueness and character of the Bellevue House, it was designated a National Historic Site for its architectural and historic heritage value associated with Sir John A. Macdonald.
A visit to the restored Bellevue House is a must see while in Kingston. Discover its architecture and gardens, step back in time and explore the grounds and heritage of the historic house where costumed staff will guide you on a tour about the life and career of Sir John A Macdonald and share tales about the past of the house and its most famous residents.
